Dreams Are Tough
Part way through 2015 I started on a journey. A journey that, hopefully, would be to realise a dream I never knew I had until I’d started writing reviews, and that was to become a games’ journalist. Now, I realised even then that this dream would take some time to come to fruition and in all likelihood, given that I work during the day, one that would take a lot of effort. I also knew that journalism, in general, isn’t an easy profession to break into either.
What has surprised me the most would be how little time I’d have to do pretty much anything. Three days of the week I pick the kids up from daycare, feed them and get them to bed. Generally, this is completed by around 7 pm and gives me a few solid hours to play review titles. Whilst this sounds like a lot of time, up until recently, I was playing football which took two nights out of my week for training. I also play indoor on Fridays and of course, one likes to keep up appearances every now and again. Weekends are filled with family time, and I am eternally grateful to my wife for the help she provides. Often she will help me by taking the kids out so I can squeeze in some extra gaming time.
There have been times when I’ve wondered just how, exactly, I’m meant to fit everything in. Surprising myself as so far, somehow, I’ve managed to do just that (with a little help of course). What has surprised me the most would be how little time I’d have to do pretty much anythingI do worry though that this ability and endless support might one day run out and hope that I manage to break through before that happens. You see my dream doesn’t just involve me writing about the gaming industry. My dream also includes me spending more time with my kids.
Family Ties
My family is very important to me. There was a time, in the not too distant past, that they were one of the few reasons I got out of bed in the morning. Those feelings are mostly a distant memory but there are still occasions where looking at pictures of them keeps me going. If I could, I’d like to be either freelance with only occasional visits to an office. It’s probably too much to ask for but I can hope right?! It’d just be nice to have the time to do things around the house which I currently spend reviewing. We’ve barely done a thing since we bought and that’s mostly been down to time and money but I’d say it’s a lot more to do with time than anything else.
So where to from here? Obviously, I’ll continue to write for the websites I currently review for. However, I’m going to try and start posting here again more too. I appreciate that I’ve said that a fair few times over the last few years. Heck, I think this blog is nearly a decade old now! In any event, I’m going to try as they only way to improve my writing is to practice. The good thing about my blog is that I can write about literally anything I please. So bear with me and please do comment. Throw some feedback my way about what I write and how I write it. It’s been tough and I know it’s not going to get easier and if I’m going to have any chance of making this work it will be by writing and writing and writing.
